Exploring the Frontiers of Science A Visit to IIT Patna
Educational trip to Vibrant Tapestry of Bazaar Samiti Patna, (An Agricultural Marketing set up of Bihar)
On 14th May 2025, the Economics students of classes XIID and XID embarked on an insightful educational trip to Bazaar Samiti, Patna. This initiative aimed to offer students a hands-on understanding of the Agricultural Produce Market and appreciate its vital role in our economy and daily lives. The day began with excitement as students, accompanied by mentor teachers—Mrs. Dolly Singh, Mr. Anup Gupta, Mrs. Nidhi Kumari, and Mr. Shivesh Prakash—boarded the bus at 8:00 a.m. En route, the teachers shared valuable insights into the history and functioning of Bazaar Samiti. Students learned that the market was established under the Bihar Agriculture Produce Market Act, 1960, and had undergone demolition between 1996 and 1998. An intriguing historical detail revealed was that every vehicle transporting goods had to pay a tax—highlighting the economic regulation of the market.
Upon arrival, students were greeted by the vibrant and bustling environment of the market. Their exploration began with the second-level wholesalers engaged in sorting bananas freshly delivered in large containers. This practical observation helped students understand the early stages of the supply chain and the importance of maintaining produce quality through meticulous sorting. A key highlight was the visit to the Central Warehouse, where students interacted with Mr. Vikas Kumar, head of the Jitban Supply Chain startup. His organization specializes in supplying carbide-free bananas and mangoes. He explained the scientific aspects of warehousing and cold storage, emphasizing temperature control to preserve freshness. This encounter provided students with an understanding of modern supply chain innovations and the importance of food safety. One striking sight was an entire lane filled with towering stacks of bananas—an occurrence linked to the upcoming marriage season.
The bananas, sourced from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Kerala, were sold through an auction-based pricing system. This mechanism illustrated how demand, quality, and seasonal factors influence market pricing through competitive bidding. The trip also included a visit to the exotic fruit storehouse owned by Mr. Rajan Gupta, who imports fruits like kiwis, dragon fruits, and avocados. Students observed how these perishable goods are stored at 4°C to maintain their nutritional value and freshness. Many students experienced seeing and touching these uncommon fruits for the first time, expanding their cultural and culinary awareness. Beyond economics, the trip offered a deep cultural immersion. Engaging with local vendors and artisans helped students appreciate the social and cultural dynamics of the region. Bazaar Samiti stood out not only as an economic hub but also as a cultural melting pot where diverse communities intersect. Overall, the visit to Bazaar Samiti was a rich, multifaceted experience. It seamlessly blended academic learning with real-world exposure, leaving students with valuable insights into market operations, logistics, and the socio-economic fabric of Patna. It was a day of exploration, education, and inspiration—far beyond the confines of a classroom.
