Exploring the Frontiers of Science A Visit to IIT Patna

On Wednesday, 14th May 2025, DPS Patna took the science students of classes XI and XII on an educational trip to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna, one of India’s top science and technology institutes. The aim was to spark curiosity and give us a real-life view of how science and research work in the real world. We reached the beautiful, green campus at 8:30 AM. It was peaceful and gave us a great start to the day. Our first stop was the Chemistry Research Lab (CST Lab). Two research scholars showed us some advanced lab equipment. We saw a fume hood that removes harmful gases during experiments, and a magnetic stirrer that mixes liquids using magnetic beads. We also learned about condensers, silicon oil baths, drying ovens, and rotavapors — all tools used to carry out experiments and separate chemical compounds. What impressed us most was how seriously safety was taken — from UV-based monitors to emergency systems, everything was well managed. It showed us how chemistry and engineering work together.

Next, we visited the Physics Lab, where we learned about electromagnetism and retentivity using real models. Seeing the actual effects of magnetism helped us understand topics that we usually just read about. After that, we went to the Mechanical Workshop. There, we saw machines like CIM (Computer Integrated Manufacturing) and CNC (Computer Numerical Control), which are used in real industries. These machines helped us see how engineering concepts are used in real life. One of the most exciting parts of the visit was seeing an Electron Microscope in action. Watching the structure of atoms appear on a screen was amazing. We also learned about NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance), a technique used to study molecules and also used in medical testing like MRI.

The visit made a big impact on us. For students preparing for IIT or NEET, it reminded us of the great opportunities we can reach with hard work. It inspired us to love science even more, gave us a clearer idea of our goals, and motivated us to aim for excellence — not just in exams, but in discovering and creating new things. This visit wasn’t just a trip — it was a turning point that made us want to truly live and experience.
